Absolute and Relative Motion Measurements on a Model of a High-Speed Containership

Abstract

A series of experiments was performed to measure the added mass and damping coefficients, and the radiated wave component of relative motion at the bow, for a model of the SL-7 containership. The coefficients of the uncoupled motions agree will with strip theory predictions, but the cross-coupling coefficients between heave and pitch are not well predicted. When the measured values of the coefficients are used in the equations of motion, the calculated motions agree well with the measured motions of a freely floating hull. The measured radiated wave component of relative motion is consistently larger than predicted by strip theory, and has a different phase angle.
