Application of Superplastic Steels.

Abstract

This program is being conducted to demonstrate that the GATORIZING forge process can be applied to the precision forging of superplastic steels, and to determine the economic benefits gained over conventional forging and subsequent machining to final shape. During this report period, forging of ultrahigh-carbon steel by the GATORIZING process produced difficult-to-forge shapes with near-net-shape envelopes. In the alloy development phase, ferrous alloys were produced by powder metallurgy techniques that contain dispersions of boride particles 200 Angstroms to 2000 Angstroms in diameter.
