Some Alternatives to Bayes' Rule.

Abstract

This document focuses on two proposed alternatives to Bayes' rule for revising probability assessments in the face of new information: Richard Jeffrey's rule of conditioning and Arthur Dempster's rule of combination. Section 2 describes Jeffrey's rule. Section 3 describes upper and lower probabilities and Dempster's rule for their combination. Section 4 shows that the two rules are in fact closely connected: Jeffrey's rule is the additive version of Dempster's rule in those situations where the two rules are comparable.
