Evaluation of NRL Glass for Fiber Optics. Phase II.

Abstract

This report covers a Phase II activity to develop glasses for medium loss fiber optic waveguides. The requirements of the final fiber are that it should have: a diameter of 75 to 125 micrometers with a 50 to 75 micrometers core; a numerical aperature of 0.4 to 0.6; losses of approximately 100dB/km; and radiation resistance. The Phase II activities include the development of improved cladding and core glass composition, raw materials procurement an batch preparation of high purity materials, controlled atmosphere melting, preparation of perform assemblies, and fiber drawing.
