Changing Gain versus Area of Stability for a Scalar, Modal Controller.

Abstract

A periodic orbit is developed and controlled, and the relationship between controller gain and area of stability is determined using mathematical experiments. The equations of variation are developed about an unstable, periodic orbit and the single, unstable mode of the variations is controlled with a controller developed using Floquet theory. The Surfaces of Section technique is presented as a tool with which to graphically determine the area of the state space in which the controller provides stability. The investigation shows that there exists a controller gain which provides a maximum area of stability when the (Calico-Wiesel) controller is applied to a set of nonlinear, time-periodic equations. It is also shown that in the application of the controller, the user can select a variable gain such that the area in which the controller provides stability is maximized for the available controller gain choices.
