A Study of Secular and Tidal Tilt in Wyoming and Utah.

Abstract

During the period covered by this report, we drilled ten holes at five sites in Yellowstone National Park. We designed and constructed equipment for recording tilt data at the sites and for transmitting the data to our laboratory in Boulder. We installed instruments at three of the sites and began recording data to our laboratory in Boulder. We installed instruments at three of the sites and began recording data. At the same time, we began a program to analyze the tilt data using the more sophisticated Cartwright-Tayler-Edden method which allows us to explicitly extract the tidal admittance as a function of frequency. We also began a theoretical effort to model the effects of the Caldera on the earth tides. This study involved the construction of finite-element models of the area followed by calculations of the tidal amplitudes and phases at our sites as functions of the parameters of the model. This latter effort is still in progress, although we do have some preliminary results.
