Partitioning Equilibria of Volatile Pollutants in Three-Phase Systems.

Abstract

Volatile pollutants in unsaturated groundwater systems are partitioned between the gaseous, aqueous, and solid phases. Equilibria between a queous solution, the atmosphere, and a solid adsorbent are evaluated in this research. An equilibrium head space technique is employed to determine Henry's Law constants and activity coefficients for components of JP-4 Fuels and for trichloroethylene. Sorption equilibria for these same compounds are also determined on aluminum oxide (A1203) with and without humic acid coating materials, on humic acids in the absence of A1203, and on naturally occurring soils.
