Acute Oral Toxicity of DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) Process Stream Samples in Male and Female Mice.

Abstract

The acute toxicity of a single oral dose of the dimethyl sulfoxide stream samples DMSO Evaporator Sludge, DMSO Recycle Solvent, and Virgin DMSO was determined in male and female albino ICR mice. The DMSO Evaporator Sludge solution produced no deaths in male of female mice at a limit dose level of 5.0 ml/kg. The Virgin DMSO solution produced mortalities in one of seven males (14%) and two of seven females (29%) at a limit dose of 5.0 ml/kg. The DMSO Recycle Solvent LD (50) with 95 percent confidence limit was calculated by probit analysis. The DMSO REcycle Solvent LD50 was 4.0 ml/kg in male mice, 95 percent confidence limit (3.2 ml/kg, 5.1 ml/kg) and 2.5 ml/kg in female mice, 95 percent confidence limit (2.2 ml/kg, 2.8 ml/kg).
