The Sampling Amplifier,

Abstract

The current trend to higher and higher signal processing speeds in radar, communication and EW systems is well known. The flexibility offered by sampling techniques for carrying out these processing functions is also widely recognized. To provide high effective sampling rates, a novel distributed parallel sampling approach using relatively narrow-band parallel channels has been developed at DREO. This unique integration of delay lines, sampling gates and amplifiers allows for amplification of wideband r.f. signals at frequencies far above the cut-off frequencies of the amplifying devices used. A discussion of the distributed sampling concept, the design of a prototype circuit and a comparison of theoretical and experimental results, demonstrating successful signal amplification approaching the gigahertz regime, are presented in this report. Other potential application areas which are well matched to this type of processing are also mentioned. (Author)
