Airglow Morphology during an Ionospheric Heating Experiment at Platteville, Colorado.
Abstract
Enhancements of OI 6300 A and OI 5577 A airglow emissions were detected by the All-Sky Imaging Photometer aboard the Airborne Ionospheric Observatory during an ionospheric heating experiments at Platteville, Colorado on the night of 12-13 Oct 1979. O-mode overdense heating produced large intensity enhancements of the 6300 A (approximately 270 R) and small intensity enhancements of the 5577 A (approximately 30 R) emissions while O-mode marginally underdense heating produce barely detectable enhancements of the 6300 A (approximately 30 R) emission only. During the overdense heating interval, the enhanced airglow patches reached an approximately circular shape with diameters of 150 km and 80 km for 6300 A and 5577 A respectively while underdense heating produced irregularly-shaped patches with dimensions of approximately 40 km x 80 km for 6300 A only.
