Velocity Shear Stabilization of the Current Convective Instability.

Abstract

A nonlocal theory of the current convective instability in the presence of a transverse velocity shear is developed. It is found that the velocity shear stabilizes the short wavelength modes and preferentially excites a long wavelength mode. Application to east-west structure in the high latitude auroral F layer plasma enhancements is discussed. (Author)
