An Investigation into the Value of Unit Cohesion in Peacetime

Abstract

A sample of soldiers and their leaders in 20 combat-ready US Army battalions was asked a series of questions about interpersonal relations in their immediate work group. Their answers were scored on a scale intended to reflect group solidarity or 'unit cohesion' summing across individuals yielded a battalion score, which proved to be highly correlated with a measure of overall battalion performance.
