Jomini: Is He Still Applicable?

Abstract

Baron Henri Jomini is generally recognized as the dominant military strategist during much of the 19th century. However, technological advances at mid-century lead to extremely high casualties when tactics were not materially changed from those used during the Napoleonic Wars. The apparent failure of Jominian thought in the mid-nineteeth century has caused some to believe that he has little to offer in the modern context. On the strategic and policy level, this is not the case and his thoughts do provide some insight into the modern world.
