Physics of High Temperature, Dense Plasmas.

Abstract

The research undertaken under the AFOSR Grant included three related projects: the production and characterization of a dense plasma target for a Relativistic Electron Beam (REB)-Plasma and REB-Neutral Gas heating experiment, the development of plasma diagnostics for REB-Plasma and REB-Neutral Gas heating experiments, and finally, the development of soft x-ray diagnostic techniques of imploding liner experiments. This report has three principal sections. Section II, Characterization of a Dense Plasma Source, summarizes the results of the plasma gun research activities undertaken. That work was in the plasma target production and characterization area for planned REB-Plasma heating experiments. Section III, Intense REB-Neutral Gas Heating Experiments, details the result of diagnostic development for experiments performed in this area. Section IV, Space and Time Resolved Spectroscopy of High Energy Density Aluminum Plasmas, presents results of such measurements made on the plasma produced by the SHIVA imploding foil experiment.
