Post Traumatic Changes in Serum Fatty Acids and Their Relationship to Organ Failure - Lung and Liver.

Abstract

We were able to develop a semiquantitative relation between high plasma free fatty acid levels and clinical parameters in common use to monitor patients undergoing respiratory distress. Monitoring plasma free fatty acid in patients has the potential to allow early identification of patients at risk for respiratory complications so that supportive and prophylactic measures may be initiated at early stages when they appear to be most useful. Plasma free fatty analyses were performed and data continue to be accumulated on total and individual free fatty acids. These data will be useful for retrospective studies. Data relating to the effect of albumin administration in minimizing respiratory distress is too preliminary to evaluate but the study is continuing. Collaborative studies with renal patients have yielded results indicating the role of albumin in drug binding - and this information is useful in helping us to understand the role of albumin and plasma free fatty acids in displacement of bound drugs. Differences in amount of free drug in traumatized patients versus healthy subjects is a significant factor in drug treatment.
