Four-Dimensional Satellite Data Assimilation.

Abstract

In this report we describe the culmination of our global satellite data assimilation research efforts. A continuous temperature data assimilation scheme was designed to be implemented using the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS). In the next section, the details of this scheme are described. Two experiments were run using the operational satellite temperature data available to Fleet Numerical Oceanographic Center (FNOC). Each experiment consisted of an assimilation and a control run. The results of these experiments are detailed in Section 3. We conclude our report by summarizing our research and discussing its future applications to the improvement of NOGAPS forecasts.
