Underwriters Laboratories Fire Tests of Sprayed Polyurethane Foam Applied Directly to Metal Roof Decks.

Abstract

The Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory has conducted extensive fire testing of sprayed polyurethane foam (PUF) roof systems applied directly to metal roof decks. Testing was conducted at Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the work was sponsored by the Naval Material Command and the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. The work was conducted in three phases with the first phase being directed toward PUF systems applied principally to standing seam metal decks, the second phase toward PUF on corrugated metal decks, and the third phase toward PUF applied to fluted metal decks. The fire test program was most successful. Results showed that the PUF roof systems performed as well as, if not better than, the standard built-up roof system. This report provides details of the test program, the roof deck construction classifications that resulted from the tests and a listing of over 100 PUF roof systems that are now classified under the three Roof Deck Constructions. These classified systems meet the fire safety criteria (specifically DOD and Navy criteria) and can be used on appropriate metal roof decks at Naval Shore Activities. (Author)
