Development of Methods of Evaluation Extensional Properties of Polymer Solutions from Measurements of Shear.

Abstract

Although large extensional flow components occur in many important technological processes of liquids, there is no currently suitable device to measure the elongational properties of polymer solutions. To obtain such measurements the BKZ model of the mechanical behavior of polymer solutions was formulated to infer extensional properties from shear measurements. Both the technique and its limitations are discussed in this report. Stress relaxation measurements of five solutions were taken and show promise for the practicality of this procedure for inferring extensional fluid properties. (Author)
