Crystal Field Splittings of the Hund Ground States of Nd(N) Ions in S4 Symmetry: Theory and Application to the Ga(3+) Site of Gd3Sc2Ga3O12.

Abstract

We discuss the use of the weak-field approximation and the point-charge model to calculate the splittings of the Hund ground states of nd superscript N ions(1 less than N less than 9) in S4 symmetry. The host crystal chosen as an illustration is Gd34Sc2Ga3012 gadolinium scandium gallium garnet-GSGG); in this crystal, the nd superscript N ions enter the Ga(3+) sites substitutionally. Lattice sums A sub nm are reported for the Ga(3+) site, and crystal-field-parameters, B sub nm, and energy levels are given for 29 ions with N = 1 to 9. The results of the calculations are discussed for each ion considered. (Author)
