Cultural Resources Investigation of the Proposed Channel Alternatives between Zippel Bay and Lake of the Woods, Zippel Bay State Park, Lake of the Woods County, Minnesota,

Abstract

The project area is located primarily on the sand bar between Zippel Bay and Lake of the Woods, in Zippel Bay State Park. Three historic sites were found and recorded: (1) the 1911-1914 Corps of Engineers constructed channel and jetty (Zippel Bay Channel and Jetty site); (2) the fish warehouse and (3) the hamlet of Zippel. These three sites are interrelated historically, with the channel, jetty and Zippel hamlet site have importance beyond the local level in terms of early 1900's commerce and activities on Lake of the Woods. While none of the three proposed channel and jetty alignments directly impact the Zippel site, it is recommended that vehicle traffic to the construction site through the northern periphery of the Zippel site be limited to a single roadway or trail to minimize potentially adverse impact.
