Cultural Resource Survey: Reaves Point, Proposed Disposal Area 5 and Disposal Area 2 Project Areas, Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point, North Carolina.

Abstract

A total of 20 historic sites were identified. Nine tar kilns, five possible residences and two river approach ramps were located. The ramps had no recognizable cultural or temporal affiliations. The possible residences consisted of architectural and domestic types of artifacts scatters. One possible residence site was located near the west bank of the lower Cape Fear River. It may have been occupied from ante-bellum time into the 20th century. Four possible residence sites were located inland. One site dated from the late 18th into the middle 19th centuries. The three remaining sites dated from the middle 19th into the 20th centuries one or more of the sites may have been associated with the manufacture of naval stores. Two tar kilns may have been possibly associated with two of the residence sites. Two residence sites and two tar kilns have been considered to be culturally significant and they are recommended for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. These sites will be adversely impacted by the proposed construction. Data recovery research projects have been recommended to mitigate the adverse impacts.
