Abstract

During the period November 1, 1981 to October 31, 1982, the principal investigator, in co-operation with several research assistants, carried out a program of mathematical research in the general area of control theory of partial differential equations. The program involved two distinct phases: an effort aimed specifically at the development and improvement of control strategies in connection with the wing flutter problem and a more general program in the area of distributed parameter control problems of hyperbolic type. This work resulted in two scientific papers which form the greater part of this report. The first of these, Some Remarks on the Current Status of the Control Theory of Single Space Dimension Hyperbolic Systems, was presented at the NASA JPL Symposium on Control and Stabilization of Large Space Structures, Pasadena, California, July 1982. The second, Admissible Input Elements for Systems in Hilbert Space and a Carleson Measure Criterion, by L.F. Ho and the principal investigator, is a paper which largely resulted from Dr. Ho's thesis work. (Author)
