Tertiary Treatment of Effluent from Holston AAP (Army Ammunition Plant) Industrial Liquid Waste Treatment Facility. 4. Ultraviolet Radiation and Hydrogen Peroxide Studies: TNT, RDX, HMX, TAX, and SEX
Abstract
Destruction of TNT, RDX, HMX, SEX, and tAX by ultraviolet (UV) radiation and hydrogen peroxide has been studied in the batch mode. Ultraviolet radiation was effective for degrading all compounds when treated together. When treated individually with UV radiation, only TNT persisted. Hydrogen peroxide did not react with any of the munitions. However, UV radiation in combination with 0.01 percent hydrogen peroxide increased the rate of destruction for each compound. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations greater than 0.1 percent were inhibitory due to peroxide absorption of UV radiation. Likewise, increases in intial TNT concentrations caused increases in absorbed UV radiation, thereby decreasing muntions degradation. Metal catalysis of hydrogen peroxide treatment of munitions provided no benefit. Ultrasound cavitational processes did not increase munition degradation rates when used in conjunction with ultraviolet radiation. Combined ultraviolet-hydrogen peroxide treatment was effective for treating mixed munitions wastewater. In actual waste streams, increased TNT concentrations may reduce degradation rates. When TNT is the predominant compound in the waste stream, addition of 0.01% hydrogen peroxide is recommended to facilitate degradation.
