10.6 Micrometer Gradient Index Optical Component Design

Abstract

Testing methods needed to determine the optical characteristics of zinc selenide and zinc sulfide gradient index materials are evaluated. The methods described include measurements for homogeneity of the material, transmission and regularity of the profile. In addition, the physical properties (i.e., the concentration of selenium and sulphur versus the spatial coordinate) are described. Three designs have been conducted to show the profile that is needed for axial and radial gradient lenses fabricated from zinc selenide and zinc sulfide. The problem of correcting the aberrations of an ogive surface are described and possible solutions to this problem are outlined.
