Stability of Stone- and Dolos-Armored, Rubble-Mound Breakwater Trunks Subjected to Breaking Waves with No Overtopping.

Abstract

The objective of the research presented is to furnish design information for stone and dolos armor on nonovertopping breakwater trunks that are subjected to severe depth-limited breaking waves. Since it would be a mammoth task to comprehenisvely investigate all the different types of existing armor, this particular research effort concentrated on stone and dolosse. Stone is a natural and economical protection when it is of sufficient size and quality to meet design constraints; and dolosse, according to nonbreaking wave data, is the best hydraulically stable concrete armor unit. Results of this research indicate that both stone stability and dolos stability are critical relative to breaking waves, thus these breaking wave stability coefficients for breakwater trunks should be on the order of and 15, respectively.
