Installation Restoration Program. Phase 1: Records Search, Keesler AFB, Mississippi

Abstract

During the course of this project, interviews were conducted with base personnel (past and present) familiar with past waste disposal practices; file searches were performed for past hazardous waste activities; interviews were held with local, state, and federal agencies; and field and aerial surveys were conducted at suspected past hazardous waste activity sites. Sites located within Keesler AFB boundaries were identified as potentially containing hazardous contaminants and having the potential for migration resulting from past activities. These sites have been assessed using a Hazard Assessment Rating Methodology (HARM) which takes into account factors such as site characteristics, waste characteristics, potential for contaminant migration, and waste management practices. The details of the rating procedure are presented and the results of the assessment are given. The rating system is designed to indicate the relative need for follow-on action. The sites have also been reviewed with regard to future land use restrictions.
