Strategic Computing. New-Generation Computing Technology: A Strategic Plan for Its Development and Application to Critical Problems in Defense

Abstract

The overall goal of the Strategic Computing Program is to provide the United States with a broad line of machine intelligence technology and to demonstrate applications of the technology to critical problems in defense. This document provides a summary overview of the program structure and goals. The program begins by focusing on demanding military applications that require machine intelligence technology. The applications generate requirements for functions such as vision, speech, natural language, and expert system technology, and provide an experimental environment for synergistic interactions among developers of the new technology. The intelligent functions will be implemented in advanced architectures and fabricated in microelectronics to meet application performance requirements. Thus, the applications serve to focus and stimulate or pull the creation of the technology base. The applications also provide a ready environment for the demonstration of prototype systems as the technology compartments successfully evolve.
