Explosive Expansion Installation Method of Main Propulsion Boiler Tubes.

Abstract

The explosive expansion installation test of main propulsion boiler tubes was successfully completed on 17 August 1983. Five, two inch screen tubes and five, one inch generating tubes in the DDG-15 NAVSSES test boiler were installed using the explosive expansion installation method. Prior to expansion, tube-end protrusions were measured and recorded. After expansion, pertinent measurements were taken to verify proper tube expansion and joint integrity. After additional (and unrelated) repair work was completed on the test boiler, the boiler was hydrostatically tested. Following successful hydro, joint performance will be monitored during and after boiler operations. With successful joint performance, retubing of an active ship's boiler will be proposed using the explosive expansion method. (Author)
