Elastic-Plastic Fracture Toughness Testing Methods.

Abstract

An interactive computerized experimental procedure is presented for obtaining the elastic-plastic fracture toughness for a material. The process employs a bend type, single specimen approach by using the measured unloading crack opening displacement (COD) compliance to obtain the crack length. Data are taken, manipulated and plotted during the test to provide the operator with the necessary information to control the testing machine. The program automatically plots the J versus crack extension curve and determines Elastic-plastic fracture toughness upon completion of the test. A second program is presented to assist the operator in fatigue precracking the specimen. A third program is used to recall, list and plot the data that were stored on diskette during the test.
