Psychometric Properties of Questionnaire Items Used in Evaluating the New Initial Entry Training Course

Abstract

This report is one of a series that describes the development and implementation of a major training evaluation of the new program of instruction (POI) for drill sergeants. This report focuses on the use of four questionnaires--(1) The Company Commander Questionnaire, (2) First Sergeant Questionnaire, (3) Drill Sergeant Questionnaire, and (4) Soldier's Questionnaire. The report describes the general psychometric properties of the items included in each of the four questionnaires, and a chapter is devoted to each. A broad range of possible indicators and criteria were used to reflect the impact of the differential training of drill sergeants. The questionnaire contained large numbers of items dealing with many different aspects of the situation, including perceptions of the behavior of specific training personnel. Items were tailored to tap various types of frequently occurring drill sergeant behaviors which occurred in the training setting. Self-ratings and measures of attitudes towards the training were also analyzed. The final chapter discusses the implications for the actual use of particular items in the formal evaluation procedure.
