Lower Housatonic River Basin, Waterbury, Connecticut. Mad River Dam (CT 00030). Phase I Inspection Report. National Dam Inspection Program.

Abstract

Mad River Dam is a stone fill concrete faced dam about 300 ft. long, with a downstream earth embankment and a 60 ft. long central concrete spillway section. The maximum structural height of this dam is 31 ft. A new 3 ft. high concrete parapet wall has been constructed on top of the existing dam. An earthen dike was constructed at the same time, about 190 ft. in length, along the right side of the reservoir. Mad River Dam was used to provide an industrial water supply to the Mattatuck Manufacturing Co. The reservoir has a storage volume of 110 acre-ft. and the size classification is thus small. A breach of the dam could affect the Fairlawn East apartment complex, about 500 ft. downstream of the dam. (Author)
