Thomaston Dam, Thomaston, Connecticut, Housatonic River Basin, Naugatuck River Watershed. Drought Contingency Plan.

Abstract

The purpose of this study and report was to develop and set forth a possible drought contingency plan of operation for Thomaston Dam that would be responsive to public needs during drought periods and identify possible modifications to project regulation within current administration and legislative constraints. The scope of this drought contingency plan includes information on current water supplies in the region, the possibility of reallocation of reservoir storage within specified limits, description of existing water supply conditions, water quality evaluation, discussion of impacts on other project purposes, and summary and conclusions. A 90% dependable yield of about 10 cfs (6.5 mgd) could be provided while still maintaining a downstream release of 10 cfs or the project filled to elevation 408 feet NGVD providing a maximum water supply reserve of about 1,050 acre-feet (342 million gallons). Thomaston Dam is not a good location for storage of water for public supply purposes. Existing water quality is marginal due to urban runoff and upstream discharges. Stored water is acceptable for industrial uses.
