M577 Fuze Product Improvement Program: Redesigned Setting Area.

Abstract

The objective of this task was to simplify the setting area of the fuze by eliminating one setting gear and pinion assembly, by changing the material of the setting shaft, by changing the fabrication processes of the parts, and by investigating new designs for the setting shaft and timer housing. The proposed design replaces the current stainless steel setting shaft with an aluminum setting shaft. No other changes to the setting area were made. The projected cost savings is $.25 per fuze.
