Convergent and Discriminant Validation of Measures of Collectivism.

Abstract

Collectivism was studied with a multimethod questionnaire and Illinois undergraduates. Nine different scales measured aspects of colllectivism with good reliability. These scales were intercorrelated, thus showing convergent validity. Through factor analysis it was determined that collectivism has three aspects: Subordination of Personal to Collective Goals, the Collective as Extension of the Self, and the Collective as a Source of Identity. Correlations with several attitude scales showed satisfactory discriminant validity. In addition, it was found that even in this individualistic sample, those who were collectivists preferred equality over equity in the distribution of rewards.
