Call for a Posse - The Air Force Response

Abstract

The article deals with Public Law 97-86, signed by President Ronald Reagan on 1 December 1982, which effectively ended 105 years of military noninvolvement in civil law enforcement. Prior to the passage of this new law, the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 prohibited the military from assisting civil authorities in their enforcement duties. The history of the new law, specific areas of Air Force interface with the civilian community, and a summary of the first year of operations are presented.
