A Partial Index to the Mission San Gabriel Baptism, Marriage, and Death Registers,
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide data from the Mission San Gabriel registers in a format which will be useful to researchers interested in the Gabrielino Indians at the time of their first intense contact with Western culture, i.e., during the years of Spanish missionization in California. As part of the missionization process, the priests kept several kinds of records, some of which the mission registers in particular contain valuable information on California Indians of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. These registers can provide demographic information of direct use to archaeologists in their analysis of particular protohistoric and early historic sites (e.g., population estimates of a particular village, ties to other villages, the date at which a village was reduced or incorporated into the mission, etc.). The registers also contain data which can be used to reconstruct many aspects of the social, political, and economic organization of the Indian people associated with the mission, such as the composition of descent groups, marriage patterns, economic ties, etc. Although the data presented in this study are extensive and may serve a variety of other purposes, they were chosen with archaeological analysis in mind. Mission registers consist of records of baptisms, confirmations, marriages, deaths, and padrons or censuses of the Indians and non-Indians associated with a particular mission.
