Estimate of Flood-Related Human Costs in the 1983 Flood at Jackson, Mississippi.

Abstract

At the request of the Mobile District (SAM), the Corps of Engineers Inst. for Water Resources (IWR) conducted a survey of households that were flooded by waters of the Pearl River in May 1983. The research was designed to measure human suffering that resulted from the 1983 flood event. The record of human costs developed through the survey provides a unique opportunity to assess flood trama damage from two flood events that affected the same community. The initial survey was conducted following the Easter 1979 flood. The survey data are for use in the benefit-cost analysis for flood abatement measures being studied by SAM.
