Enkephalin Containing Peptides in Human Blood

Abstract

The opioid pentapeptides met-enkephalin and leu-enkephalin are widely distributed both within the central nervous system, the pituitary, and other tissues including the adrenal gland. Following the initial observation that the met-enkephalin sequence was contained within the structure of beta-lipotropin (and hence beta-endorphin), it has recently become apparent that the enkephalin sequences are also to be found within a variety of other peptides. It now seems unlikely that met-enkephalin is derived from a beta-endorphbin-like precursor; other enkephalin-containing sequences remain as candidates for a precursor role.
