Laser Welding of Mild Steel at NIROP (Naval Industrial Reserve Ordnance Plant), Minneapolis.

Abstract

A comparison of the time required to weld a component with the present process and of the anticipated time necessary to weld the same component with the laser beam has resulted in an economic analysis. Three illustrations of different weld joints that will be fabricated with the laser extrusions with weldments is also shown. The mechanical properties of laser-beam weldments of A36 structural steel have been measured by transverse-tension specimens. The laser-beam weld is stronger than the base plate.
