An Archeological Overview and Management Plan for the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Adams County, Colorado

Abstract

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal is an installation of the U.S. Department of the Army's DARCOM Command. As a steward of approximately 17,000 acres of public lands, the arsenal has responsibility for the management of any cultural resources located within it. One archeological site is presently known to exist on the arsenal, but local geomorphology and culture history suggest aht both prehistoric and historic cultural resources are likely to be found in the undisturbed portions of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Those sites possessing physical integrity will have high research value. In compliance with Army regulations AR 420, and with consideration of future ground disturbance activities planned for the arsenal, it is recommended that all presently undisturbed activities planned for the arsenal, it is recommended that all presently undisturbed areas (8227 acres) of the arsenal be subject to archeological inventory and evaluation. Cultural resources should be located, recorded, evaluated, and assessment of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places should be made for appropriate and significant sites. Archeological inventory data, together with historic architectural information, would then serve to help develop a facility historic preservation plan.
