Report of the Working Group on Large-Scale Computing in Aeronautics.

Abstract

The current status, future needs and directions of large scale computing in aeronautics are reviewed with emphasis on fluid dynamics, structures and materials, propulsion and energetics, flight dynamics and integrated design. Computer applications in these disciplines are identified and the developments in computer capabilities anticipated for the 1980s and 1990s are discussed and summarized. Alternative means of providing access to computing facilities to NATO nations are considered including the provision of a central computing facility and the establishment of a computer network linking the NATO nations. It is concluded that currently available large computers will satisfy many of the disciplinary needs in the areas considered; that computers will play an increasingly important role in interdisciplinary research and integrated design; that such applications as the design of maneuvering aircraft, rotorcraft design and simulation, and advanced engine design, will place greater demands on computer capacity and speed than can be met during the next decade. Recommendations are made relating to the establishment of a NATO computer center and a NATO computer network that would permit members ready access for the purpose of training and early operating experience, and would provide a shared capability larger than that of many individual nations.
