The Rimland of Northeast Asia: A Study of Soviet Power Projection

Abstract

This report presents an outline and discussion of the geopolitical concept developed by N.J. Spykman as it relates to Soviet militarism. It emphasizes the importance to world stability of the 'rimlands' of Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, and the Far East. For the purpose of this paper, the rimland of Northeast Asia is specifically examined and serves as a model of the entire geopolitical concept. The purpose of the study is to determine whether or not Soviet power projection in Northeast Asia conforms to Spykman's theory of geopolitics.
