Phase Equilibria of Stored Chemical Energy Reactants.

Abstract

The reaction of lithium aluminum alloy with water at high temperature is considered in terms of phase equilibria in the system Li-A1-0-H. A thermodynamic analysis of the system reveals the potential importance of lithium hydride as a reaction product. Major needs for experimental phase equilibria data are outlined, and a determination of the Li20-A1203 phase diagram is given top priority. Experimental methods for preparation and handling of atmospherically sensitive Li20/A1203 mixtures are given.
