Estimation of Target Positions Using Planar Arrays.

Abstract

Estimation of target position using planar arrays is discussed. For high signal-to-noise ratio, an analytic expression for the rms error in position is derived as a function of the array properties. This is evaluated for various array configurations and it is shown to be approximately constant across the plane of the array. Comparisons are made with arrays in which only pairs of elements are used to estimate position, and it is shown that this may lead to a degradation in performance. (Author)
