Anthropometry of the Clothed US Army Ground Troop and Combat Vehicle Crewman

Abstract

In order to make estimates of the spatial allowances needed for the clothed and fully equipped crew and passengers of a ground combat vehicle, anthropometric data were collected on five nude male soldiers who approximated the percentile range of US Army men and US Army armor crewmen on height and weight. Anthropometric data were also collected on the same individuals when they were outfitted in each of four ground combat vehicle crewman's clothing ensembles and each of four passenger (ground troop) clothing ensembles. The crewmen's ensembles were for hot weather, hot weather with chemical protection, extreme cold weather, and extreme cold weather with chemical protection. The ground troop clothing ensembles were the same with the addition of load-carrying equipment. For each of 28 body dimensions, a difference score was calculated to reflect the changes in body size as a function of donning each clothing ensemble. Predicted measurements of the clothed body were then generated for each of the eight clothing ensembles.
