The Relationship between Radiation Sensitivity and Redox Equilibria.

Abstract

The objective of this research program is to achieve an understanding of the relationship of glass processing variables to radiation sensitivity of the glass. Glass processing variables include melting time, melting atmosphere, cooling rate and annealing time. The principle applications of the results of this program are in fiber optic communication systems and other glass applications in radiation environments. Results indicate that optical defects, paramagnetic defects and electrical properties are subject to influence by glass processing variables. These processing effects also extend to the sensitivity of the properties to radiation damage. (Author)
