Analytic Models for Radiation Induced Loss in Optical Fibers II. A Physical Model,

Abstract

An analytic expression based on a relatively simple phenomenological physical model for radiation induced losses in optical fibers was derived. The expression yielded excellent fits to RADC data on steady-state induced loss in optical fibers. Using the model, it may be possible to gain insight into the reasons for differences in the radiation responses of nominally similar fibers. This could give clues for procedures to improve the radiation hardness of optical fibers. (Author)
