Installation Restoration Program. Phase 1. Records Search Wake Island Airfield

Abstract

This report identified and evaluated potentially hazardous waste disposal sites at Wake Island Airfield. Records of past waste handling and disposal practices at the facilities were reviewed. Interviews with past and present installation employees were conducted to develop a history of waste disposal practices. The environmental setting for the area was summarized. Twelve sites at the installation were found to have potential to create environmental contamination. These include a landfill, two burn areas (dumps), three liquid fuel areas, a fire protection training area, a scrap metal pile, two fuel leak areas, a shop area and the installation road system. Follow-on investigations (Phase 2) were recommended and outlined.
