The AFGL (Air Force Geophysics Laboratory) Absolute Gravity Measuring System. A Final Report and Operating/Maintenance Manual.

Abstract

A multiyear program at the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory (AFGL) has produced an instrument for absolute gravity measurements accurate to eight decimal places. This transportable instrument has been used to measure gravity at a calibration line through the central part of the United States, as well as at Hanscom AFB, Mass. The final version of the equipment is described. Data processing procedures, corrections applied, and the determination of these corrections are given. The report also gives operation and maintenance procedures for the apparatus. Also included in the report is a history of the development of the absolute-gravity measuring apparatus, including development of the first prototype instrument, experiments with an apparatus incorporating a falling chamber-within-a-chamber, the ideas behind this approach, and the shortcomings that caused a return to the single-chamber approach.
