Hinged Hydrostatic Transducers.
Abstract
The initial proposal for this work was to prepare trial conformal hydrophones based on hinged arrays of individual transducer elements of three basic types. Choice of elements was based on previous work with composite transducers and consideration of sensitivity and durability. Polyurethane was chosen as a hinging material because it was an elastomer that had been used in other composite applications. Later this material was replaced by a flexable epoxy material that showed improved polymer/ceramic bonding, excellent self-bonding, and increased pot life. Many variations of element design were tested in 1 in. x 1 in. arrays. Variations in elastomer hardness were tested. Different fillers were incorporated in the hinging material to make it hydrostatically compressible. Along with this work two flexable electrode systems were developed, for use with polyurethane and epoxy based polymers. (Author)
